THINK ABUNDANT AND RESOURCEFUL

Having a mindset focused on abundance and resourcefulness is essential in supporting your creativity. Thinking in terms of abundance creates a positive mindset, where all the possibilities are on the table and all situations are viewed as opportunities. Having an abundant mindset broadens the thinking in terms of what can be done and how it will come. It will lead to new ideas, creations and innovations because limits are not placed on possibilities, and the collective mind can ponder new and exciting ways to solve problems and to create value.

Resourcefulness is also an important mindset to have. Being resourceful allows teams to establish very creative and innovative ways to make something happen and get it done without wasting resources. In this sense, resourcefulness also supports the business to be commercial.

If the mindset is not an abundant one, teams will just see problems and obstacles. They will be slow to respond, and not solve problems effectively. Not being resourceful will lead to high levels of waste and will also take resources away from areas that need them.

Having a mindset focused on abundance and resourcefulness is a skill, and it is a key organisational capability that will be required to succeed in disruptive environments. Fortunately, it can be acquired – it just means reframing your thinking.

Earlier in my career I was speaking with an executive about my resource challenges. He asked me how many people I had working for me, and from memory I just placed a number on the amount of direct reports I had at the time. He told me that was rubbish. He said that everyone worked for me: he worked for me, every employee of the organisation worked for me, the suppliers and service providers worked for me, even the leadership worked for me. He said I needed to pretend I was the CEO and think that all the resources were available to me – I just had to articulate why I needed them, and engage whom I needed to help me with what I was trying to achieve. It was a good lesson; he was teaching me how to be resourceful and not to place limitations on my thinking.

There will always be resource constraints, no matter what organisation you work with, work for, or maybe even found. So having a resourceful and abundant mindset is critical if you’re going to be creative, and also to support commercial performance.We can look at this another way, too. Let me ask you something: How many of the top 100 companies of ten years ago still make that list? How many have lost their dominant position? It does not matter which list you reference; the fact is that the dominant companies of ten years ago are dying and new companies that have led innovation now monopolise these lists – think Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Uber, LinkedIn.
